GVC Ride Categories & Pace Guide Find the ride group that matches your comfort, fitness, and cycling experience.

Green Valley Cyclists uses ride categories (A through D) to describe typical pace, distance, and route difficulty. Use the guide below to choose a ride that matches your comfort and fitness level.

Category Distance Pace* Route & Regroups Best For
A 35+ miles 17+ mph Moderate to difficult routes with climbs. May or may not have rest stops. Regroups usually only at major climbs. Experienced riders comfortable with fast group riding and hills.
A/B 25+ miles 14–17 mph Moderate routes and/or climbs. Rest stop midway. Occasional regrouping depending on the group. Riders transitioning from B to A pace.
B 25+ miles 14+ mph Moderate routes; may include small climbs. Rest stop midway. Regroups as needed. Regular riders with solid group-ride experience.
B/C 20+ miles 12–14 mph Easy to moderate routes with some small climbs. Rest stop midway. Ride leader usually sweeps. Riders building fitness and confidence in group riding.
C 20+ miles 12+ mph Generally easy to moderate routes. Frequent regroups; ride leader typically sweeps or assigns a sweeper. Casual riders or those returning to cycling.
C/D 5–15 miles 10–12 mph Easy, mostly flat routes. Group usually stays together. Sweeper provided. New riders and anyone who prefers a relaxed pace.
D 5+ miles Up to 10 mph Very easy, and mostly flat. Group stays together from start to finish. First-time group riders, recovery rides, or riders easing back in.
